Contrary to the belief of some, Dean Lombardi’s vision for the Kings franchise didn’t culminate last June with the Stanley Cup. It was only the beginning of what he hopes to be many more Championships to come. To get there, a very critical part of the equation will be the Kings farm system, which is unlike any other prospect pipeline in the history of the organization.

With the recent call up of 20 year old top prospect Tyler Toffoli, as well as other quality prospects playing in Manchester of the AHL, it’s easy to forget there are even more prospects waiting in the proverbial wings.

One of those is 20 year old left-winger Michael Mersch. Mersch, who is listed at 6’1 – 215lbs, attends the University of Wisconsin where he led the Badgers in goals and points. After being named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week last week, the Junior scored 2 goals (including the game winner) on Saturday in the final game of the regular season, beating top-ranked St. Cloud State. The win helped secure 4th place and home ice for the Badgers as they head into the WCHA playoffs this weekend.

The team, who was ranked 10th last year, lost in the first round of the playoffs. This year, they started this season going an abysmal 1-7-2 before turing it around in spectacular fashion. In this article on UWBadgers.com, head coach Mike Eaves had this to say, “To achieve home ice as a reward for their blood, sweat and tears and sticking through hard times–it’s a great thing for them… That’s a big deal. That’s well deserved.”

In the same article, Mersch was asked about the goal in the video below and had this to say, “When the puck came to me I just pulled it back and brought it to my back hand and beat the goalie,” Mersch said. “It was a patient kind of play. I’ve never scored like that. That’s probably my prettiest score as a Badger.”
