The Manchester Monarchs needed overtime to grab their fifth victory in their last six games with a 3-2 victory against Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. Manchester (27-24-3-3) is third in the Atlantic Division with 60 points. Bridgeport (23-24-5-4) is fourth in the Northeast Division with 55 points.
Center Jordan Weal scored the game-winning goal for the Monarchs at 2:36 of overtime. Center Andy Andreoff played puck from right point to Weal on right wing half wall. Weal skated in and lifted a backhand top-shelf on the right doorstep for the goal. Defenseman Vincent LoVerde also recorded an assist on Weal’s ninth goal of the season.
Coach Mark Morris
“You know what it was a game that was back and fourth and we had some timely scoring from some young players that really made a huge difference in the game.”
“For the most part I thought we did a pretty good job defensively. Martin Jones was good in the net. We had a couple mental lapses there and we paid for it but big goal when Stewart fed O’Conner out in front. That was a gritty goal.”
“Great play by Kozun to Colton Yellow Horn and a terrific move to beat DiPietro five-hole an then a great give-and-go play between Weal and Andreoff to cap it off for the win but it could have gone either way. It was a close game and we’ll take the points.”
“You know what I think it was a little bit of a team effort there. Great play by Vinnie in the defensive zone to get that puck to me and then Andy, he made a fabulous pass to draw those two guys in. Driving to the net I just reacted from there. It was a four-man effort to get the puck in the net.”
“Guys just coming in are playing hard and giving the sparks that we need. Every time they are out there, they’re creating energy. That’s what we need.”
“And the guys that have been here are really stepping up their game and playing together. We’re coming together as a 24-man unit and it’s really showing on the ice with the points we’re getting.”
